Cleaning the printhead regularly is the best way to insure maximum life of the printhead in a Zebra printer.  Contaminates in even the cleanest of environments can build up, cause addtitional friction and lead to pre-mature ware.  When this happens, print head elements burn out which leads to poor quality text, graphics and bar codes.
